Our History

The LocoMotive opened its doors in January of 1996. We have been hard at work creating delectable vegetarian and vegan fare and putting our principles into practice ever since. The LocoMotive uses organic ingredients whenever possible--we get most of our produce from the Organically Grown Co-op (distributing organic fruits and vegetables throughout Oregon and Washington) and are their largest restaurant account. We use free-range eggs, organic milk and a range of other organic foods. We even offer an organic wine and beer on our menu.

We moved to Eugene, Oregon, in the Fall of 1995 to open the LocoMotive, leaving the tropical climate of Bonaire, an island in the Netherland Antilles off the coast of Venezuala. The restaurant idea surfaced one night on the phone with one of our daughters who lives in Eugene. We were talking about how, while there were plenty of vegetarian options at most restaurants in Eugene, an upscale, all-meatless restaurant did not yet exist.

Lee Zucker learned to cook most of her dishes from the women she has met during extensive travels around the world. Lee, her husband Eitan and their three daughters spent the better part of six years traveling the world in an old--but still running!--Ford Econoline camper. Upon returning to the U.S., Lee continued to seek out and learn the secrets to a variety of international cuisines. Lee published a food column for several years for the Hartford, Connecticut Courant.

Eitan moved to the U.S. from Israel as a young man. His love of wine and good food compliments--and usually inspires--many of their travels. Retiring early to Bonaire, Eitan now works the front of the house every night, greeting and entertaining visitors to the LocoMotive.

The LocoMotive is a way for us to put some of our values into practice. Long-time advocates for environmental and animal rights causes, we can now gently encourage others to participate in protecting their own health and the health of the planet--one bite at a time.

Vegetarian and vegan does not mean just sprouts and tofu. Our menu reflects some of the best meatless cuisine found around the world. Friends will often share with us a favorite dish discovered during travels, or their grandmother's famous and jealously guarded recipe not prepared since childhood.

We love food and the time spent sharing a meal with friends and family. The intimate atmosphere of the LocoMotive, with only thirteen tables, creates a comfortable space for our guests--many of whom come to eat on a weekly basis. Please join us for a meal soon.
